Building a Studio

Nearly 30 years ago, I dreamed of having my own art studio—complete with a grand easel, a wide desk, and large windows overlooking inspiring views. In reality, I painted in the corner of a small bedroom, staring out at a busy estate road. But I loved that little nook. My parents, always supportive, helped however they could—whether with a second-hand stool or art supplies from jumble sales. Many of those items still sit in my studio today, reminders of where it all began.

Over the years, even as I moved homes, my creative space remained modest. A corner of a room, packing everything away after each session, never dampened my passion. But as I committed more seriously to my art and business, I realised I needed a dedicated space. I returned to my childhood room—now empty—and asked my mum if I could rent it to build a proper studio. Her enthusiastic yes began the transformation, and with a bit of paint, persistence, and some help from her along the way, the space started to take shape.

Without a car, transporting materials and equipment became a mission of public transport, long walks, and careful planning. Bit by bit, I set up functional zones for portraiture, landscapes, packaging, and even a corner for animation—complete with a repurposed desk, second-hand furniture, and plenty of character. I wanted a space that felt personal yet efficient, tidy yet creative, and over time, it came together. Friends like Bola generously donated key items like a studio lighting, overhead camera clamp and a camera to document proceedings from then on, helping turn the dream into a reality.

Five months later, it’s become my second home—a space filled with artwork, reference prints, and photos of my kids to remind me why I paint. It may not be my forever studio, but for now, it’s perfect. Soon, I’ll be opening it up through online lessons and tutorials, sharing not just my art, but the joy of creating in a space built with care, patience, and heart.
